There’s a story that Peter Tosh learnt to play the guitar as a young boy by watching a man play the same song for half a day. He memorised everything the man did until the man gave him the guitar to have a turn. When he played the tune perfectly, the man asked, ‘Who taught you to play the guitar?’ Peter Tosh answered, ‘You did.’
Peter Tosh is also credited with teaching Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer to play guitar, and his long list of songwriting credits includes Get Up Stand Up, Equal Rights, and this classic, Apartheid.
Tosh played plenty of anti-apartheid concerts right up until his death in 1987 (like Lucky Dube he was shot during a robbery).
